Biographical/Historical note
Anne Gayle Ingram (1924-2002) was the daughter of Irvine S. Ingram, first president of West Georgia College, and Martha Munro. Ingram is perhaps best remembered for her teaching career, her dancing, and her commitment to higher education.
Anne Gayle Ingram was born in 1924 in Carrollton, Georgia. She attended West Georgia College for two years and went on to earn her degree in sociology at the University of North Carolina. In 1948, she earned her Master's degree from the University of Georgia. Ingram immersed herself in the war effort during World War II by decoding messages with the U.S. Army Signal Corps in Arlington, Va. and later working for the Veterans Administration in Atlanta. Ingram pursued her passion for dance after the war ended by opening her own workshop in Carrollton. She also was assistant professor for the University of Mississippi from 1951-1954 teaching primarily physical education. After years of teaching and performing dance, she closed her business in 1955 to travel. She signed up with Special Services and headed to Germany, only to get a telegram a few months later telling her that her mother was dying. After her father, Irvine S. Ingram retired from his position as the president of West Georgia College in 1960 he received a Ford Foundation grant to travel the world and evaluate various educational programs. Always extremely close to her father, she decided to take out a loan and go with him. They visited several countries including India, Pakistan, China, Italy, France, England, and Spain. In 1962, she accepted a teaching position at the University of Maryland and taught there for 26 years. She was active on many committees and she helped develop classes concerning women's issues especially in relation to sports. She also became the senior coordinator for graduate courses on the sociology of sports. Despite her teaching position with the University of Maryland, Carrollton was always home to Ingram and she often traveled back and forth during those 26 years. After retirement, she became a member of the Carrollton Woman's Club, the Carroll County Historical Society and stayed active with the Carroll County Humane society. She has published many articles and is the recipient of numerous awards including the Lillian Smith Work Scholarship in 1940, the Phi Epsilon Kappa service award in 1980, and the West Georgia College Founders Award in 1983.
