Confederate States of America Army, Infantry, Cobb's Legion, Company B muster roll

 Collection
Identifier: LH-0025

Scope and Content

This collection is a muster roll for the Cobb's Legion, Company B, handwritten on eight leaves of paper. The item includes the name, age, rank, and details of military service within the company. It also includes information on individual soldiers' personality traits and comportment during battle.

Ephraim D. Fouse compiled the muster roll for Henry C. Brown, Esquire, whose business or residence was located in Carrollton in the 1910s. Fouse's intention of sending the muster roll was to provide an approximate list of all the original and additional soldiers gained within Cobb's Legion, Company B, perhaps in response to the largely inaccurate publication in 1910 of a muster roll within Charles Speer's Souvenir-Edition. Fouse noted on the muster roll that there may be some small errors as to dates and that soldiers who have nothing written about them either made it home or their actions and then current conditions are unknown.

Administrative History

The Cobb's Legion Infantry, Company B, of the Confederate States of America, otherwise known as the "Bowdon Volunteers" was formed in 1861 by Charles A. McDaniel, the founder and first president of Bowdon College. The original unit primarily consisted of young volunteers from the college. When the Cobb's Legion was formed in the summer of 1861, McDaniel offered the services of his "Bowdon Volunteers" who became Company B of the legion. The company fought in the battles at Second Manassas, Crampton's Gap in Maryland, Malvern Hill, Cold Harbor, Yorktown, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Salem Church, the Wilderness and Spotsylvania, the Shenandoah Valley, Fort Sanders, and the Appomattox Court House.

The compiler of the muster roll, Ephraim D. Fouse was born in 1841 to John and Ruth Ann Fouse. On July 30, 1861, at the age of twenty, Fouse was enlisted in Bowdon by Captain McDaniel, who was the commander of the Cobb's Legion, Company B. In November-December 1862, Fouse worked extra duty as an Adjunct and was listed as a Second Lieutenant. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on May3, 1863. On July 21, 1864, he was given a leave of absence for sixty days due to a gunshot wound in his right thigh, which he received at Petersburg on July 8th, and eventually resigned on November 22, 1864 due to his injury. As an adjunct, Fouse kept valuable information on the members of Company B which he eventually used to compile the muster roll in the early 1910s. Fouse died in Coweta County, where he resided with his wife Martha. A headstone at Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan, Georgia, lists his death date as June 12, 1913.
