Carmel Historic District collection

 Collection
Identifier: NC-0012

Scope and Contents

Correspondence, family geneaologies, a historic district inforamtion form, maps, photographs, research notes, and a speech given by Gwendolyn Caldwell to the Athens Garden Club.

Of note are histories of the Harmon Caldwell family. Caldwell, born in Carmel, was president of the University of Georgia (1935-1948) and Chancellor of the University System of Georgia (1948-1964).

The materials appear to have been complied by the widow of Harmon Caldwell, Gwendolyn Burton Caldwell, who advocated for the preservation of this area and whom, in 1993, secured the help of Ellen B. Ehrenhard, a historic preservation consultant, to conduct further research and write the Historic District Information Form.

In a June 1998 speech before the Ladies Garden Club of Athens, Gwendolyn Brooks recounts her marriage with Harmon, whom she married in 1944 when she was a professor of plant pathology at the University of Georgia, and their time and home in his birthplace of Carmel.

Also of note is an interview of D.X. Gordy from 20 May 1980, a first-person narrative about his family who were potters.

Processing Information

In June 2019, University of West Georgia Ingram Library Special Collections and the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society executed a Memorandum of Agreement under which Special Collections would assess and prioritize processing of archival collections held by the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society, assess preservation needs, and arrange and describe archival materials, thereby making them more publicly accessible. Work on this project was conducted under the leadership of Dr. Michael Camp starting in August 2019. The project was interrupted because of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic from March-September 2020, and was resumed in October 2020 under Head of Special Collections, Blynne Kensel Olivieri, only to go under a hiatus again due to a COVID-19 surge in the region. The project is expected to conclude in 2022.
