Carroll County Superior Court records, 1848-1967
Scope and Content
This collection contains two separate accessions. The first accession was received in 1987 and consists of ten boxes, mostly divorce case files from 1876 to 1948. Books containing the record of application for and final disposition of each case can be found at the Carroll County courthouse. There are also files for other types of court cases, including adoption papers, Confederate pension records, alimony papers, deeds, and murder trials. Each category covers a different ten to fifteen-year time span, but the majority of the documents fall between the years 1870 and 1915.
The second accession was received in November 2013. It contains one box of documents and 22 bound volumes which date from 1852 to 1967, on accounts, appearance dockets, certiorari dockets, civil subpoena dockets, civil suits dockets, equity dockets, execution dockets, fees, issue dockets, motion dockets, petitions, and records of writs.

Custodial History
In 1987, West Georgia College Special Collections librarian, Myron House, and Neva Lomason Special Collections librarian, Rudene Hollingsworth, obtained the Carroll County Court records from storage in a granite vault in the basement of the old Carroll County Courthouse. They were loose papers originally destined for destruction. The records were then divided between the two institutions because of storage space concerns. In 2013, the Carroll County Court records (Ordinary, Superior, and Misc. along with City Court of Carrollton) were transferred to UWG Special Collections from the Neva Lomason Library except for tax records which were retained by the Neva Lomason Library.
Provenance
Donated by Tracy Teal, Carroll County Commissioner, in 1987 and by Alan J. Lee, Clerk of Carroll County Superior Court, in November 2013.
