Biographical / Historical

Edna Pace Huey was born to John Pat and Ida Collins Pace on August 8, 1924 in Center, Georgia. She was their eleventh child giving her six sisters and four brothers. Huey attended Benton School in Jackson County, Georgia, and later attended Young Harris College in Young Harris, Georgia. After graduating, she continued her education at West Georgia College (now University of West Georgia) in Carrollton, Georgia, where she completed the third-year program for prospective teachers. She graduated in 1944 and later returned to West Georgia College and graduated again in 1958 and 1971.

While in Carrollton, Huey met Johnnie Buiel Huey who was working in Carroll and Haralson counties in the mid-1940s. The couple married on April 2, 1948 and had two sons, Michael in 1950 and Chuck in 1956.

Huey was a teacher in the Carroll County School System having worked at Burwell, Mt. Zion, and Bowdon elementary schools. She was very active in alumni events at the University of West Georgia and served as a member of their Alumni Association Board of Directors. She was awarded the Thelma Harman Turner Loyalty Award, an alumni award. Huey was also active in the Carroll County, Georgia, community and supported various organizations including Bowdon Area Historical Society, the Sprig 'N Dig Club, and the "As You Like It" women's club.

Edna and Johnnie Huey established an endowed scholarship in memory of their late son, Charles "Chuck" Huey, at the University of West Georgia. Chuck was a United States postal worker from 1995 until his death in June 2018. He had been awarded for his "Outstanding Performance" and named a Distinguished Mail Person by the Society to Appreciate Mail Persons (STAMP). The Charles D. Huey Memorial Endowed Scholarship requires recipients to be a United States Postal Service (USPS) employee or the child or grandchild of a USPS employee with special preference given to students living along Chuck's former postal route in Carroll County.
