Biographical / Historical

Alice's House, formerly Community Children's Home, Inc., in Carroll County, Georgia, was created in response to the concern for the welfare of abused, neglected, and foster children who entered the state foster system. The idea for the home started in 1993 when Evalyn Parrish, who served on the Citizens' Review Panel where she listened to cases regarding the wellbeing of children and made recommendations to a judge, noticed there were too few people to care for foster children in West Georgia. With the dream of creating a safe and secure group home for children awaiting placement with a foster parent, Parrish, former attorney and Juvenile Court judge Tommy Greer, and members of the community began raising money.

Three acres of land on which to build the home were donated by Mike and Kay Horton, and Roush and Associates of Carrollton and Atlanta donated their time and serivces to design and draft the plans for the home. The organization obtained 501.c3 nonprofit status, and Georgia Baptist Children's Homes and Family Ministries, Inc. was secured to manage Alice's House.

The organization was renamed Alice's House in honor of Alice Richards, a community leader, philanthropist, and wife of Southwire cable and wire company founder Roy Richards Sr. With a groundbreaking ceremony on March 19, 1996, Alice's House opened in the spring of 1997. Due to state legislation known as the Family First Prevention Act, Alice's house changed its status from a group community home for children to a foster home during the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic. In 2023, Jojo's Closet, a provider of clothing, shoes, baby gear, and other essentials for foster parents, relocated to the Alice's House basement which also acted as a training center and support group space.
