Scope and Contents

The Baptist Association minutes collection contains minutes of the (1) Georgia Baptist Convention (dated 1883), Bethlehem Baptist Association (dated 1889), Carrollton Baptist Association (dated 1874-1884), Concord Missionary Baptist Association (dated 1877, 1921), Fairburn Baptist Association (dated 1873-1874), and Tallapoosa Baptist Association (dated 1870-1903). Also included are additional Baptist publications (dated 1880-1889 and 1949) including issues of "The Great Expositor" (December 1888), "The Standard Expositor" (April 1889), "Royal Service" (Woman's Missionary Union, 1949), and an untitled and undated item.

Biographical / Historical

The Georgia Baptist Convention: On June 29, 1822, the first general association of Georgia's various Baptist communities organized at Powelton Baptist Church in Hancock County. Initially called the General Baptist Association and later called the Baptist Convention for the State of Georgia, this organization served as an important foundation for the Southern Baptist Convention, which formed in Augusta, Georgia, in 1845. Renamed the Georgia Baptist Convention in 1919, this organization currently operates as the state's primary convention for Georgia's Southern Baptists. Bethlehem Baptist Association: As of 1889, the Bethlehem Baptist Association was composed of the following churches: Haralson County: Bethel, Pleasant Grove, Tallapoosa, Waco, Bethlehem, Fellowship, and New Hope; Polk County: Bethlehem and Friendship; Floyd County: Pleasant Hope; (counties unlisted): Wimberly Hill, Mt. Carmel, and New Prospect; and Cleburne, Alabama: Mountain Creek.

Carrollton Baptist Association: As of 1884, the Carrollton Baptist Association was composed of the following churches: Carroll County: Abilene, Bethel, Bethesda, Beulah, Bowdon, Carrollton, Cross Plains, Eden, Eureka, Flat Rock, Indian Creek, Macedonia, Mount Olive, Mount Pleasant, New Lebanon, Oak Grove, Pleasant Grove, Pleasant View, Providence, Roopville, Salem, Second Church Carrollton, Villa Rica, Whitesburg; Coweta County: New Lebanon; Douglas County: Ephesus, Friendship, Mount Zion, Pine Mountain, Pray's Mill; Heard County: Rockalo, Yellow Dirt.

Concord Missionary Baptist Association: As of 1921, the Concord Missionary Baptist Association was composed of the following churches: Austell, Beulah, County Line, Central, Concord, Douglasville First, Douglasville Second, Ephesus, Mabelton, Mount Harmony, Mount Pisgah, New Hope, Orange Hill, Pleasant Hill, Poplar Springs, Powder Springs, Prays Mill, Sweetwater, Union Grove, Winston.

Fairburn Baptist Association: As of 1874, the Fairburn Baptist Association was composed of the following churches: Campbell County: Bethel, Bethsaida, Bethlehem, Campbellton, Enon, Fairburn, Liberty, Mount Pisgah, Mount Vernon, Providence, Shadnor; Coweta County: Sharpsburg; Cobb County: Mt. Pisgah; Douglas County: Beulah, Corinth, County Line, New Hope, Poplar Springs; Fayette County: Flat Creek, Line Creek, White Water; Fulton County: Mount Olive.

Tallapoosa Baptist Association: As of 1903, the Tallapoosa Baptist Association was composed of the following churches: Concord, Corinth, Dallas, Draketown, Holly Springs, Mount Olive, New Canaan, New Georgia, New Harmony, New Hope, Pumpkinville, Sweetwater, Union Grove, White Oak Spring.

The Baptist Association minutes collection is composed of minutes compiled by the Georgia Baptist Convention, Bethlehem Baptist Association, Carrollton Baptist Association, Concord Missionary Baptist Association, Fairburn Baptist Association, and Tallapoosa Baptist Association. Also included are editions of additional Baptist publications.

This collection is arranged in the following order: (1) Material related to Georgia Baptists of note and minutes of the Georgia Baptist Convention (1883), (2) Minutes of the five Baptist associations represented in this collection, (3) Baptist circulars, and (4) an untitled publication.
