Scope and Contents

The bulk of the Frank S. Kelly scrapbook is a collection of materials dating from 1934-1938 which documents his graduation from Blakely High School and his involvement in a number of programs at West Georgia College from 1934-1938. The scrapbook contains photographs, letters of correspondence, memorabilia pertaining to student activities, and documents used in the editing of the 1937 West Georgia College yearbook, The Chieftain, with Kelly as editor-in-chief.

The collection also contains six undated postcards published in the 1937 West Georgia College yearbook, The Chieftain. The artcards are signed by Warner Morgan and are undated. The collection also has a first edition newsletter titled, "Times Freek Press," published May 18, 1970.

A special feature of the collection is a personal memoir on DVD made by Frank S. Kelly which documents his life in Blakely, Georgia as a child and his post-college years as an officer in the 7th Army Division during WWII. Kelly gives a first-hand account of his experiences in the 1943 invasion of the Aleutian Islands of Kiska and Attu as well as the invasions of Leyte in 1944 and Okinawa in 1945. Kelly documents the preparations for the invasion of Tokyo before the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki ended the war in the Pacific theatre.

Biographical / Historical

Frank Simon Kelly was born on August 19, 1919, in Blakely, Georgia, and died in Birmingham, Alabama, on November 19, 2010. He attended West Georgia College from 1936 to 1937. He and his wife Katie had one child, James Michael Kelly. Frank Kelly worked for the Southern Bell Telephone Company both before and after the war and served in the 7th Division of the United States Army from 1943 to 1945.

The Frank S. Kelly scrapbook contains materials from his high school graduation in Blakely as well as his participation in various organizations while attending West Georgia College. The scrapbook contains photographs, letters of correspondence, memorabilia pertaining to student activities, and documents used in the editing of the 1937 West Georgia College yearbook, The Chieftain, with Kelly as editor-in-chief.

The collection also contains a personal memoir on audio DVD. The three DVDs encapsulate his early childhood in Blakely as well as his experiences as an officer in the 7th Division of the United States Army deployed to the Pacific Theatre of World War II. The memoirs serve as primary evidence of the invasions of the Aleutian Islands of Attu and Kiska in 1943, the island of Leyte in the Philippines in 1944, and the Japanese island of Okinawa in 1945.

In his memoir, Frank Kelly recounts the preparations made by the 7th Division of the Army for the invasion of the Japanese mainland before the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 ended the war. Kelly's war account concludes with his experiences during the occupation of Seoul, Korea, in 1945.

Frank Kelly's memoir concludes with his experiences after returning home to Georgia. The remembrances include his work for the telephone company and the death of his son James Michael Kelly in 1974.

The collection contains a scrapbook created by Frank S. Kelly documenting his graduation from Blakely High School and involvement in a number of student activities at West Georgia College including his role as editor of the 1937 Chieftain yearbook. The collection also contains a memoir by Kelly on DVD which details his life in Blakley, Georgia, and his World War II experiences as a captain in the 7th division of the Army serving in the Pacific Theatre.
