Biographical / Historical
West Georgia College conferred the first Associate of Science in Nursing degree in June 1976. In 1978, the nursing curriculum was a two-year, six quarter program of nursing and general education courses. Upon completion, students were conferred an Associate of Science Degree with a major in nursing. This made them eligible to take the nursing exam administered by the State Board of Examiners and, if passed, licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in Georgia.
A Bachelor of Science in Nursing program was approved at West Georgia College in December 1988 following a survey of registered nurses in an eight-county area in the west Georgia region. The first courses for this BSN-RN degree program were offered in Fall 1987, with the first class graduating in December 1988, shortly after the program was accredited.
