Scope and Contents

This collection contains materials used by author Craig Shirley to write the book, Citizen Newt: The Making of a Reagan Conservative (Nelson Books, 2017).

The materials include transcripts of Shirley's interviews with Newt Gingrich spanning three years as well as photos taken at the time. There are also interviews with leading conservative politicians, commentators, journalists, and thinkers. Of special importance are transcripts of interviews with former Vice President of the United States Dick Cheney, the late U.S. Senator Bob Dole, and Fox News commentator Sean Hannity. Included in the collection are unpublished manuscripts as well as original documents and correspondence with the Carter, Clinton, and Reagan presidential libraries. The collection features material from political action committees headed by Newt Gingrich that includes his speeches and publications pertaining to the state of conservative thought during and after his tenure in Congress.

Biographical / Historical

Craigan Paul Shirley is an American author, lecturer, historian, and public affairs consultant.

Shirley was born in Syracuse, New York, on September 24, 1956. He attended Springfield College in Massachusetts, graduating in 1978 with degrees in history and political science.

He got his start in politics as a child, walking door to door campaigning for 1964 Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater. Upon graduation from college, he worked on the political campaign of Gordon J. Humphrey, who served as U.S. Senator from New Hampshire from 1979 to 1990. Shirley met future president Ronald Reagan while working on Humphrey's campaign. This led to Shirley's work for political action committees for Reagan in 1980 and 1984.

Shirley joined the Republican National Committee in 1982 and served as the Communications Director for the Conservative Political Action Committee (CPAC) in 1984. He worked on President George H.W. Bush's campaign for president in 1988.

Shirley has founded and served in executive positions at several public affairs firms including Shirley and Banister Public Affairs.

Craig Shirley has authored and edited numerous books on American history and politics including, Reagan’s Revolution: The Untold Story of the Campaign That Started It All (2005), Rendezvous with Destiny: Ronald Reagan and the Campaign That Changed America (2009), December 1941: 31 Days That Changed America and Saved the World (2011), Last Act: The Final Years and Emerging Legacy of Ronald Reagan (2015), Reagan Rising: The Decisive Years, 1976-1980 (2017), Citizen Newt: The Making of a Reagan Conservative (2017), Mary Ball Washington: The Untold Story of George Washington's Mother (2019), and April 1945: The Hinge of History (2022).

Shirley is married to Zorine Shirley and resides in Virginia. They have four children.

This collection contains materials related to and used by the American political author Craig Shirley to write the book, Citizen Newt: The Making of a Reagan Conservative (Nelson Books, 2017). Materials contained in the collection include Craig Shirley's unpublished manuscripts, author notes, personal and email correspondence, background interviews of subjects, and the political speeches and strategies of Newt Gingrich. Interviews of note include former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Newt Gingrich, former U.S. Congressman and Senator Bob Dole, former Vice President of the United States Dick Cheney, and political commentator Sean Hannity.

Processing Information

The Craig Shirley papers originally contained fifteen binders, twelve titled "Periodicals," containing newspaper and magazine clippings dating from January 1985 to November 1994; one binder titled, "Local newspapers / GOPAC," includes "America's Natural Majority," written August 10, 2005; two binders titled, "UWG Archives," includes one loose page from the Jimmy Carter Library. There were also four plastic-wrapped bundles of unsorted papers including manuscripts, emails, copies of clippings, and copies of articles. The donation also included a box of books, used for research by the author, that were separated for cataloging.

Twelve binders of photocopied clippings from major newspapers and journals were examined and discarded as the content is easily accessible to researchers elsewhere. A binder containing copies from the Newt Gingrich papers at the University of West Georgia were also discarded as the original papers are available onsite.
