Philip Calvin Paul was born on August 4, 1948, in Maryland. In 1978, Paul obtained a B.S. in Psychology, with a minor in Sociology (with emphasis on Criminal Justice), from the University of Maryland. He later earned an M.S. in Clinical Counseling from Vanderbilt University. He was married to Melanie Paul and the couple counted as their family three Shetland Sheepdog therapy dogs, Molly, Locksley, and Lothair, and a cat, Chloe.

Paul joined the Air Force in 1969, served during the Vietnam War, and held many posts during his 25-year career including Turkey, Greece, England and the Beijing Embassy in China where he spoke fluent Chinese. He served at Langley Air Force Base in a number of positions, earning the Meritorious Service Award upon his retirement from the military in 1989. He also was awarded the small arms expert marksmanship ribbon and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross. An outstanding tennis player, Paul was co-captain of the Langley Air Force Base tennis team for many years. He was a musician, writer, and author.

Philip Paul was also experienced in radio broadcasting and sign language. He worked for the Transportation Department for Hampton City Schools where he was a substitute teacher. Because of his experience in public relations, he became the producer for the talk-show “Mike Rau” and became the Board Operator/News Announcer for WNIS (850 AM). He also a coached the Langley Air Force Base Varsity Tennis Team.

Philip C. Paul died on September 22, 2018.
