Faculty Meeting minutes

 Collection
Identifier: UA-0005-44

Scope and Contents

The collection is primarily comprised of minutes from meetings of the faculty, later called the general faculty, at West Georgia College and then the State University of West Georgia. These meetings were presided over by the college, then university, president.

Along with the minutes are meeting agendas, memoranda, reports of various committees, and materials pertaining to the creation of Faculty Senate.

The first minutes are from September 21, 1933 and include discussion of the Rules and Regulations Committee, hours for the library, the responsibility of faculty, campus entry gates, student conduct, how to deal with illness of students, meals, and office phones. They were respectfully submitted by the Secretary to Faculty, R.W. Lavender.

An important highlight of this collection are the documents showing the development of what became the Faculty Senate. In the Faculty Meeting minutes of November 20, 1968, "Mr. Joe Turner announced that the West Georgia College Chapter of AAUP had submitted to President Boyd a proposal to appoint a committee to study the possibility of establishing a faculty senate" (box 2, folder 7). On November 25, 1969, President Boyd sent out a memo, with attachment, on the proposed constitution for a college senate, and Dr. Robert Miller, Chair of the Committee on the College Senate presented the document at a faculty meeting on December 5, 1969 (box 2, folder 8). Then, on November 15, 1972, the Committee on Faculty Governance, with L. Doyle Mathis as Chair, sent a memo to the faculty and general administrative staff proposing a Constitution, with Article III creating a Senate to "serve as a legislative body and executive agency of the Faculty of the College" (box 3, folder 4). The Faculty Governance Proposal of Feburary 15, 1973 was approved by the faculty with a vote of 109 to 39, and the May 10, 1973 minutes record the approval of the proposal by the Chancellor and that the proposal would be effective immediately (box 3, folder 5).

Under the presidency of Ward Pafford, documents began referring to the "General Faculty." The identification of minutes between "faculty minutes" and "general faculty minutes" fluctuates during the rest of the 1970s but "general faculty" appears to be in regular use by 1980.

Biographical / Historical

In 1933, under the direction of President Irvine Sullivan Ingram, the faculty of West Georgia College began meeting to discuss the curriculum, student activities, the administration of the college, degree programs, budgets, policies and procedures, and faculty governance.

Until the formation of the Faculty Senate in 1973, the standing committees that were organized by the faculty governed through the college's general faculty meetings. When the Faculty Senate began assuming its duties, general faculty meetings were held biannually.
