Biographical / Historical
On April 15, 1933, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia established West Georgia College as a junior (two year) college member of the System. The new college was located at the site of the former Fourth District Agricultural and Mechanical School near Carrollton. The work of the Fourth District School, which had served the community for twenty-six years, was discontinued.
In 1939, the Chancellor and the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia authorized the addition of a third year to the curriculum of the college and, in 1957, a fourth year was added, making West Georgia College a senior unit of the University System of Georgia.
The primary focus of a college registrar during this period was to maintain students' academic records, assist students in registering for classes, make changes to their schedules, and provide transcripts and other records upon request.
In the period from 1933 to 1979, W. Fred Gunn, Katie Downs, N.M. Cawthon, Elizabeth Parker, Merald E. Thomas, and Gordon E. Finnie served consecutively in the position of West Georgia College Registrar.
