Scope and Content

The Commencement records include programs from 1936 to present day for West Georgia College, the State University of West Georgia, and the University of West Georgia. Materials reflect the graduating classes of two year degrees from West Georgia College up until it began to offer a four year degree program in 1957.

Prior to 1960, summer commencements do not have an official program. A brief change was seen only for the summer commencement of 1960 but it would be 1967 until summer ceremonies would have official commencement programs.

Administrative History

Commencements have largely fallen under the combined responsibilities of the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Office of the Registrar. The Registrar’s Office is responsible for maintaining official student academic records, including transcripts and grades.

Materials span the history of the college known as West Georgia College, the State University of West Georgia, and the University of West Georgia.
