The Faculty Senate records contains minutes, agendas, and presidential replies for senate meetings from 1973 to 2002. The collection contains memorandums, proposals, reports, policies, procedures, and newspapers. The files from 1969 to 1973 include preliminary meeting minutes and proposals of creating the Faculty Senate at West Georgia College. Included are meeting minutes, the proposed constitution, and suggested amendments. The records are filed in chronological order based on meeting date. Note that some meetings were reconvened and/or rescheduled as noted on certain files.
Faculty Senate records from 2007 to present are available online at the University of West Georgia’s Vice President for Academic Affairs website at https://www.westga.edu/administration/vpaa/faculty-senate/senate-committee-archive.php.
In addition, archived files from 1998 to 2007 can be accessed by using the link above.
Executive secretary files (see boxes 17-18) include materials that were removed from binders. The files are labeled by the secretary’s name, subject, and year. Individual meeting files, which had no annotations, were interfiled into the appropriate chronological file.

Administrative History
At the behest of the local chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), President James E. Boyd (1961-1971) in January 1969 appointed a committee to prepare guidelines for a College senate. Yet, after revisions by several groups, the senate proposal seemed to satisfy neither the faculty nor the Chancellor’s office.
In 1972-1973 and under the guidance of President Ward Pafford, an ad hoc committee on faculty governance revised the proposal for a College senate, which had been in limbo since 1970. Restricting student participation to committees and designating the College president as presiding office (with veto power), the measure won approval from the Chancellor’s office. The new faculty senate had its’ first organizational meeting on June 4, 1973, with Dr. Lemuel N. Norrell of the English Department as the first executive secretary.
