Scope and Contents note

Records related to the programming and operations of the West Georgia / State University of West Georgia / University of West Georgia Department of Art / School of the Arts from 1980 to 2024. Items include faculty vitae, brochures, greeting cards, exhibit announcements and invitations, newspaper articles, photographs, catalogs and other publications, correspondence, printed programs, memoranda, and posters.

Subjects covered include the professional accomplishments and activities of the art faculty, outreach efforts by the department, memoranda generated by the chair, the department's annual honors program, scholarships offered by the department, student art show openings, the department's Summer Art Programs in Bayeux, Paris, and London; and the retirement and granting of professor emeritus status to long-time art faculty member Henry Setter.

Biographical/Historical note

The Department of Art - which later evolved into the School of the Arts (SOTA) - was established on July 1, 1974. When chair of the department Derrill Maxwell resigned from that position in 1979, Bruce Bobick, associate professor of art, became chair, effective July 1, 1979, and remained in that position until his retirement in 2005. The School of the Arts was disbanded in July 2024.
