The Faculty Senate is the primary means through which faculty participate in the shared governance process at the University of West Georgia. Through its various committees, faculty senators and representatives from all Colleges, Tanner Health System School of Nursing, and Ingram Library advise the administration on issues of concern. The Arts and Sciences and School of Education Committees were dedicated to organizing and electing faculty to serve on the Faculty Senate and its various other committees. The Faculty and Staff Personnel Committee recommended policies concerning appointments, promotions, tenure, salaries, benefits, grievances, and dismissals. This committee also heard and made recommendations in grievance, discipline, and dismissal cases. The General College Matters Committee recommended policy and procedures for public relations, convocations, campus security and safety, telephone services, mail services, parking and traffic control, and physical plant problems.

The Intercollegiate Athletics Committee recommended policies pertaining to the conduct of intercollegiate athletic programs, nominated the athletic director, approved sports schedules, reviewed budget requests, and supervised the scholarship program. The Student Activities Committee recommended policy and procedures for student discipline, student publications, inter-collegiate athletics, student organizations, concerts, lectures, and other student activities. The Student Services Committee recommended policy and procedures concerning financial aid, housing, health and food services, counseling services, and student security and safety. The various subcommittees were mostly active from the the late 1960s to the early 2000s.
