Upon West Georgia College’s transition to university status, President Beheruz Sethna appointed a Logo Committee to recommend to PAC (the President's Advisory Committee) “two or three logo designs” to represent the newly-named State University of West Georgia in the summer of 1996.

The committee was chaired by Dr. William A. Rooks, Jr., Department of Marketing and Real Estate; with other members being Dr. Ellen Gruber, School of Education; Dr. Tobin Hart, School of Arts and Science and Faculty Senate; Lisa Matheson, Student Government Association; Fred O’Neal, representing West Georgia alumni and the community; and David Parkman, Executive Director of University Advancement.

The committee developed a “Logo Entry Form” to be submitted by UWG alumni, faculty, students, and friends of the University with a deadline of October 31. The committee received 90 submissions and recommended six to PAC on November 27, 1996 (see Box 2, folder 5). One of the copies of the report has a yellow sticky note on it that says, "Off Record."

None of the six recommendations were the flame, representing the torch of knowledge, which became the university's official logo in April 1997.
