Scope and Content

This collection contains student surveys on students' sexual conduct and beliefs. These surveys were distributed in Dr. Anne C. Richards' Personal Relations classes from 1981 until 1999. The survey was initially 16 questions and grew to over 160. Surveys were anonymous; Dr. Richards furthermore typed the students' answers so they could not be identified by handwriting.

In addition, this collection includes materials pertaining to the Department of Psychology, College of Arts and Sciences, School of Education, Association for Humanistic Psychology, West Georgia College, and the State University of West Georgia.

Other materials in this collection consist of papers from committee meetings, class syllabi, lists of faculty members, policies, procedures, surveys, faculty minutes, research, scholarly journals, correspondence, newspaper articles, and research and publicity for Richard's book, Invitations to Dialogue: The Legacy of Sidney M. Jourard.

Biographical Note

Anne Cohen Richards served as a professor of psychology at the State University of West Georgia from 1975 until 2001. Her academic focus was on theoretical and applied aspects of humanistic psychology.

Richards graduated from Brandeis University in 1965 where she studied with Abraham Maslow, James B. Klee, Lewis A. Coser, and Everett C. Hughes. At the University of Florida she studied with Arthur W. Combs, Sidney Jourard, Ted Landsman, Hal Lewis, and Franz Epting. She holds a Doctor of Education degree.

Richards has co-authored and edited numerous books including: Homonovus: The New Man (1973) co-authored with her husband, Fred Richards; Educational accountability: A Humanistic Perspective, with Fred Richards and and I. David Welch (1973); and she edited Matters of Consequence: Selected Writings of Arthur W. Combs (2010) among other works.

Richards served as the Executive Officer of the University's chapter of Association for Humanistic Education (AHE) from approximately 1976 to 1981 and has served as a trustee for the Field Psych Trust since 1999, which honors the professional contributions of Arthur W. Combs and funds graduate research related to perceptual psychology.
