Sacred Harp ephemera collection
Collection Overview
This collection was compiled by Myron W. House, former Special Collections Librarian, who had a personal interest in shape note singing. The collection consists of one series, papers, which is divided by sub-series based on the type of material: invitations and announcements, minutes and directories, and newsletters. Folders are arranged alphabetically.
Minutes and directories often include an agenda of the actions during each convention, financial information relating to the conventions, a list of prominent presidents and secretaries within Sacred Harp, and a calendar of annual Sacred Harp singings. Some minutes and directories also include circular letters.
Invitations, some of which were sent to Myron House personally, are for attendance at various state conventions and to various local church singings and social gatherings, as well as to various ceremonies and honorary birthday parties for notable members of the Sacred Harp community. The invitations and announcements are to events held in Alabama, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Washington D.C., as well as to Ontario, Canada.
All of the newsletters within the collection were published within the southern United States and include the National Sacred Harp Newsletter, published in Bremen, Georgia.
