Biographical/Historical note

Annie Belle Weaver was born February 6, 1906 in Tupelo, Mississippi, the daughter of Robert A. Weaver and Georgia May (Allen) Weaver and the granddaughter of the famous ‘Private’ John Allen, member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Mississippi. She graduated with a B.A degree in English from Mississippi State College for Women in 1926 and then attended Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia where she received a B.A. degree in Library Science in 1928. Later she would do graduate work at the University of Chicago and New York University.

Weaver taught at Emory Junior College at Valdosta, Georgia between the years 1928-1931, and was Librarian at Southwestern in Memphis, Tennessee from 1931-1933. A fellow student of Weaver’s in the library school at Emory had been Ida Munro, sister-in-law of Irvine S. Ingram, president of the newly-created West Georgia College. Ingram was looking for a librarian and Ida knew that Annie Belle was not happy in her current position. Ingram offered Weaver the position of librarian and she accepted, thus becoming the first librarian at West Georgia College, serving from August 1933 until her retirement in 1969. In 1968 she was named the first Director of Libraries and upon retirement the Director Emeritus.

Weaver’s library in 1933 was a classroom located in the west wing of the Administration Building. The collection numbered approximately 1000 volumes, many of which were duplicate copies of high school textbooks that were of little value in the college curriculum. The book budget for the year was $500 with an extra $50 for periodicals. In 1937 a separate library building, Sanford Library, was completed with a grant from the Rosenwald Fund, and a Carnegie Foundation grant helped with books. In 1940 the new library had to be expanded. In 1944 the West Georgia Regional Library began operating out of the basement of library expansion and did so for fifteen years. Before Weaver retired in 1969, she had presided over the construction of a three-story library building and had an annual budget of $160,000 for books.

In 1952 she received a West Georgia College Founders Award. On May 29, 1981 the Special Collections of the University of West Georgia’s Ingram Library was named the Annie Belle Weaver Special Collections in her honor. She was a member of several professional organizations, the Arts Study Club, the Lit-Mu Club, and Sunset Hills Country Club. She was a member of the Carrollton First Methodist Church and attended the Nellie White Circle. She died January 21, 1991.
