W. Benjamin Kennedy papers
Scope and Contents note
This collection contains manuscripts and correspondence for Kennedy’s book Muskets, Cannonballs, and Bombs, published in 1974 by Beehive Press. It also contains personal papers of Kennedy while he was a professor at West Georgia College. Included in these materials are by-laws, committee files, correspondence, history department files, memos, memoranda, Phi Kappa Phi files, School of Arts and Sciences files, and course lectures and presentations.
Film reel of O’Conners’s Journal du Siege de Savannah was removed from Series I. A reproduction of the map Plan of the Siege of Savannah, with the joint Attack of the French and Americans on the 9th October 1779 was also removed from Kennedy’s papers. These items can be found online.

Biographical/Historical note
William Benjamin “Ben” Kennedy began working in the history department at West Georgia College in 1962. During that time, he served on numerous boards and as department head from 1967 to 1971. Upon his retirement in 1999, he was given emeritus status. The history department also established a scholarship in his nam - "The W. Benjamin Kennedy History Graduate Award of Excellence" has been awarded annually to a graduate student in the history department. Dr. Kennedy passed away in Carrollton on February 19, 2022.

Organized into three series: I. "Muskets, Cannon Balls and Bombs"; II. Personal files; and III. Presentations and Course Lectures. Series I and II are arranged alphabetically by file title.

Donated by Dr. W. Benjamin Kennedy on December 14, 1976. Additions were donated by Kennedy on August 24, 2007, and October 15, 2016.

Processing Information
In 2023, the W. Benjamin Kennedy papers were weeded to discard materials that did not warrant retention. In MS-0024, 1.47 linear feet of materials were discarded. (The previous linear footage was 3.57.) This collection now consists of 5 boxes. The boxes were numbered 1-9, but now are 1-5. Materials discarded included clippings and research notes.
