Scope and Contents note

This collection contains notes and research documents gathered by Dr. W. Cope Goodwin pertaining to Banning Mill and its surrounding community. The notes include student research and some of Dr. Goodwin’s notes during an interview with a Mrs. Amis, who had family ties to the Mill. The collection also contains cemetery records, community surveys, and copies of a newspaper articles summarizing Dr. Goodwin’s findings. Also included are hand-written note cards entailing a chronology of the Banning Mill from 1827-1972 and copies of photographs and documents pertaining to the Mill and the surrounding community.

Biographical/Historical note

Winslow Cope Goodwin was born August 5, 1926 in Marshalville, Georgia, the son of Cope Goodwin, Sr. and Elender Goodwin. He received his A.B. and M.A. degrees from the University of Alabama, his SP6 from Emory University, and his Ph.D. from Florida State University.

Prior to coming to West Georgia College he taught and coached at Western High School in Coweta County, Georgia and Central High School in Carroll County. He was named Region Coach of the Year twice and Teacher of the Year in each school. Dr. Goodwin served as an assistant professor of history at West Georgia College from 1964 to 1989 and also served as the faculty and alumni advisor to the Kappa Sigma fraternity. Altogether he spent forty-three years in the field of education. Following his retirement he served as interim headmaster at Oak Mountain Academy.

Dr. Goodwin was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy. He died September 18, 1993.
