Northwest Georgia High School Association records
Scope and Contents note
This collection contains a record book with the minutes of the Northwest Georgia High School Association from its first meeting in April 1905 to 1910. Newspaper clippings about the society are glued onto some of the pages, as well as a program for the annual meeting in 1911.
There are also included three letters that explain the movements of the record book. In 1935, the founder of the association, L. Josephine Rozar, sent the book to the Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville when they asked for it. The record book remained in Milledgeville until 1996, when Georgia College’s archivist decided to return it to Carroll County and gave it to UWG Special Collections.

Biographical/Historical note
The Northwest Georgia High School Association was founded by L. Josephine Razor, principal of the Temple Model School, in April 1905 as a literary society for exceptional high school students in the local area. Seven schools were part of the first meeting including Bremen, Bowdon, Buchanan, Dallas, Douglasville, Tallapoosa, and Temple. Each of these schools were asked to send a boy and a girl to take part in a contest involving their oratory skills, as well as prepare one musical number for the meeting. These contests and others that involved spelling, composition, and athletics were held every year between the local schools, which had grew to include Cedartown and Carrollton by 1907. In 1912, the interest in the association and its contests had spread all the way across the state. Due to this large amount of interest, Dr. J. S. Stewart, Superintendent of Secondary Education in Georgia, suggested the association be disbanded and a similar organization developed in each district. This was done following the final meeting of the Northwest Georgia High School Association which was held in LaGrange in 1912.
