Biographical/Historical note
As related by the letter, Melindah J. Boyd Groce was married to Lewis Dudley Groce, who was a Confederate soldier in the Civil War, serving in the 41st Georgia Infantry, Co. G out of Carroll County. The author of the letter, Moses Gresham Herrin, fought alongside Groce, and took care of him when Groce fell ill. Herrin found a private house in Columbus, Mississippi, for him to stay at while he was sick. Groce died of dysentery a few days later, on May 1, 1862. Groce had requested that Herrin write to his wife to inform her of his death, which Herrin did on May 2, 1862.
