Biographical/Historical note
Gold mining in Tallapoosa began during the Georgia gold rush and many of the gold miners panned the Tallapoosa River in the hopes of finding precious metals. Originally known as Holland Mines, the mine was located on Highway 100 on Walker Creek, just south of downtown Tallapoosa. Surrounding the mine, a community was built which included about two dozen homes, a school, a blacksmith’s shop, a post office, and buildings where the gold found could be processed. In addition to mining gold, miners also worked the fields, growing items such as cotton and chopping down wood to sell as lumber. The Holland Mines were sold to the Camille Mining Company in the 1880s before being sold again to the Royal Gold Mining Company on January 26, 1896. The mine remained in operation until the 1930s, when a tornado destroyed all the buildings used to process the gold. A couple years later, during World War II, all the equipment was sold for scrap metal and water from an underground spring gradually filled the mine.
