Evans, Randy, 2005 Oct 25
Scope and Contents note
Interviewed by Dr. Mel Steely on October 25, 2005 at 2PM at the UWG-TV Studio.
Dr. Steely begins by quickly recapping some background information that had been discussed in a prior interview with Randy Evans. Evans begins by discussing his role as legal council to Newt Gingrich and the ethics allegations that had arisen while Gingrich was acting as Speaker of the House and strategies some politicians had employed in an effort to participate in a coup attempt against Gingrich. He speaks about the eventual shift in Gingrich's position in the Republican Party from an asset to a possible liability with regard to the Republican's sway in Congress. Evans talks about the ways in which Gingrich gained the speakership as well as how he successfully led a conversion of the Republican Party into the governing majority of Congress and then goes on to discuss Gingrich's eventual decision to leave Congress in order to make gains for the party as a whole. Evans speaks of his personal relationship with Gingrich and the transition of having been his student at West Georgia College to becoming his peer, confidant, and legal consultant. He cites the release of Saving Lives & Saving Money as the "single biggest turning point in his post-speakership era," changing Gingrich's image and providing the platform for his future endeavors, alluding to the possibility of his running for president. Evans then goes on to discuss his interactions with other Georgia and federal delegates; he includes a story of Governor Zell Miller, and Evans' assistance with Miller's book publication. Evans talks at length about Speaker of the House, Denny Hastert and about the 2000 presidential election, going on to speak generally about the progression of the Republican Party and shifts in political alignments.
